Officials Say 104 Killed in Gaza

Israel cites the deaths to a stampede at an aid drop

Officials in Gaza said scores of people were killed and injured while waiting for humanitarian aid, and accused Israel of firing on a crowd. Israel’s military said in a statement that “dozens of Gazans were injured” in a stampede crush that broke out after humanitarian trucks entered northern Gaza in the morning as residents scrambled to reach aid.

Israeli forces opened fire on members of the crowd who approached soldiers in a manner deemed threatening, and the military is reviewing the incident, according to Israeli officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss an ongoing investigation.

An official with the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), also speaking on the condition of anonymity as is the military's policy, described two discrete events, with the stampede happening first and a separate incident involving gunfire afterward. The official told reporters that the stampede "has nothing to do with the IDF [but] the IDF is being blamed for it, which is outrageous and ridiculous."
