What EQ, Ancient Romans and Stoicism Have in Common

Romans like Marcus Aurelius arguably understood the connection

Even though the term "emotional intelligence" was coined in the mid-1960s, it took the 1995 release of Daniel Goleman's book Emotional Intelligence to popularize and make the idea seem obvious.

Clearly, the better you can understand and manage your emotions, the better you can make your emotions work, not against you -- the greater your chances of success in nearly any pursuit. Studies show developing greater emotional intelligence can lead to higher performance and pay. Studies show developing greater emotional intelligence can lead to better professional and personal relationships.

Maybe that's why, even though they didn't use the term, the Stoics -- especially the Romans Seneca, Epictetus and Marcus Aurelius -- got there first.
