Instead of Keeping Peace, Make Peace

The absence of difficult conversations perpetuates toxic culture

Do these thoughts sound familiar? "I don't want to tick that person off." "I don't have time to deal with people's feelings." "Don't rock the boat." "Maybe if I ignore it, the problem will disappear." "I do not want to have that hard conversation."

It has been difficult for me to have hard conversations with people — conversations where you must give an honest, direct, painful message to someone. It's even more difficult when the person with whom you're communicating tends to be volatile.

One day, I had an epiphany when considering why this was so difficult for me. I do not like dealing with people's negative emotions. Why? Because negative emotions make me feel out of control. They are unpredictable and intimidating.
