To Speak or Not to Speak

Examining an important leadership decision during crisis

Among the many challenges facing corporate leaders is the question of how to respond to the multitude of geopolitical and social issues that constantly emerge. One of the biggest arguments against communication on hot-button issues is the idea that communicating means companies are taking sides. As the logic states, companies should stay silent on anything remotely political in nature because there is always the opportunity to offend someone — employees, customers, shareholders and business and community partners.
