AARP CEO Says Ageism at Work Is Getting Worse

Understand why this is bad for everyone

The COVID-19 pandemic had a profound impact on the workforce. Some changes have been welcome: Remote workers can now avoid contending with dreaded 5 o'clock traffic, for example. Other changes aren't so positive. Jo Ann Jenkins, CEO of AARP, said there has been an uptick of age discrimination coinciding with the pandemic.

In an interview with Barron's Andy Serwer, Jenkins said that older workers bring value to companies, and AARP, which serves Americans 50 and older, is fighting to protect that.

"We have evidence to show that having multiple generations in the workplace at one time is actually a benefit to companies," Jenkins said. "Fifty-six cents of every dollar in the U.S. is spent by someone over the age of 50. These are the consumers who are actually buying the products that are being put in the market."
