Beginning Jan. 15, 2024, Ohio Parents Must Consent for New Social Media Accounts

In July, legislators approved the Parental Notification by Social Media Operators Act

A new state law which will require certain online companies to obtain parental consent for kids under the age of 16 before they can open an account, takes effect on Jan. 15, 2024.

The Parental Notification by Social Media Operators Act was approved by legislators in July.

Platforms that must comply include Facebook, Snapchat, X (formerly Twitter), and TikTok but also any platform that, according to the legislation this will also, "cover gaming platforms, shared message boards, etc. that target children or are reasonably anticipated to be accessed by children."
