Israel Expands Ground Operation

More than 15,800 dead in Gaza

On Monday, Israel's military said it struck hundreds of locations in the Gaza Strip as it expands its ground operation against Hamas to every part of the enclave.

"We're close to completing that mission in northern Gaza," and troops are engaged in "fierce fighting," an Israeli government spokesman told reporters Monday.

As hostilities resume after a week-long pause and Israel extends its operations to the south, the death toll continues to rise, and many civilians displaced earlier in the conflict are again being forced to flee. Almost 1.9 million people in Gaza are internally displaced, equivalent to 80 percent of its population, according to U.N. figures released Monday. Aid groups and Palestinian families say maps posted online by Israel directing them to "safer" areas are sowing confusion because they lack specifics, or those areas are overcrowded or under attack.
