Bill Would Let All Law-abiding Ohioans Above 21 Carry Hidden Guns

Ohio’s current concealed carry laws only apply to handguns

A new proposal by Ohio House Republicans would permit law-abiding Ohioans age 21 and older to carry concealed firearms without a permit. Republican Reps. Ron Hood of Ashville and Tom Brinkman of Cincinnati have tried repeatedly and unsuccessfully to change the law through so-called “constitutional carry” legislation.

Currently Ohio’s concealed carry laws apply to only handguns. House Bill 174, reintroduced Wednesday, expands those provisions beyond to firearms such as rifles and shotguns. The bill also would end a requirement that people carrying concealed weapons notify police that they are armed if stopped by police officers.

The Fraternal Order of Police and anti-gun-violence activists oppose the idea.
