Nursing Shortage Hitting Medical Field

Demand is heating up for registered nurses

Demand is heating up for registered nurses as local health networks expand and unemployment declines, leaving hospitals searching for not just the best way not just to recruit nurses but to hang on to them.

The number of jobs available to registered nurses is growing much faster than the average for all types of jobs, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The bureau predicted in 2016 that RN employment will grow by 15 percent job growth by 2026. Registered nurses are the most listed job on OhioMeansJobs.com, the state’s public help wanted website.

“When you have an unemployment rate of 4 percent or less, it makes it pretty tight,” said Christie Gray, chief nursing officer at Miami Valley Hospital.
