At least 19 students have been killed in a mass shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas, according to local officials cited by the Associated Press (AP). Two adults were also killed, with one of them a teacher according to Texas Governor Greg Abbott.
The suspected gunman, an 18-year-old from the small city, is also dead, authorities said. He entered the elementary school at about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday and was armed with two military-style rifles, according to state Sen. Roland Gutierrez who told AP that had been briefed by state police.
The tragedy in Uvalde is now the third deadliest school shooting in U.S. history. According to a running count by Education Week, there have been 27 school shootings at K-12 schools resulting in injury or death so far this year. That frequency could put 2022 on track to have an even higher number of shootings than last year, which saw 34 incidents overall.
