Congress Approves ‘Minibus’ Spending Package

The package includes a continuing resolution to keep funding flowing through Dec. 7

House and Senate leaders reached agreement on a package of three spending bills before departing early for a previously scheduled recess next week. The conference report also includes a continuing resolution that will keep all government agencies funded through at least Dec. 7, likely preventing any threat of government shutdown before the fall elections.

The first bundle of fiscal 2019 spending bills covers the departments of Energy and Veterans Affairs, the Army Corps of Engineers and the internal budget of the legislative branch.

Clearing the package, which already passed the Senate this week, marks the first time in more than a decade that multiple spending bills will be sent to the president’s desk for signature before the end of the fiscal year.

“Both Republicans and Democrats agree that our partisan disputes on a given issue should not paralyze this institution’s ability to carry out its most fundamental Constitutional responsibility: funding the government,” said Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Richard Shelby (R-AL).
