Jenkins Drafting IRS Restructuring Bill

House Republicans want to reform the current process for resolving taxpayer disputes

House Ways and Means Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) is planning to release legislation to restructure the IRS sometime in the next two weeks.

House Republicans have been intent on improving the IRS’s customer service and, in particular, reforming the current process for resolving taxpayer disputes. According to Bloomberg BNA, Jenkins will circulate a draft bill with Ways and Means colleagues and hold a markup by the April 17 tax-filing deadline.

“As we come off the heels of generational tax reform, we must take the next steps to ensure the Internal Revenue Service is doing its job, which is to help taxpayers, not entrap them,” Jenkins said recently.

In addition to making sure taxpayers are treated fairly when they deal with the IRS, Jenkins’ bill will seek to modernize IRS technology and procedures and reduce the threat of identity theft and fraud.

The administration is awaiting Senate confirmation for two top positions at the IRS. President Trump has nominated Charles Rettig to serve as IRS commissioner and Michael Desmond to serve as chief counsel.
