Demonstrating Adjective Restraint

When everyone is super, no one will be

Huddled in layers of sweaters and socks as the ‘bomb cyclone’ grips the eastern seaboard, I’m struck by the increased use of bombastic terms and phrases in our lexicon. Meteorology is not alone in its adoption and promotion of pulse-racing descriptions.

We have been deep in "superlative land" for some time now, creating a level of ‘winning’ brinkmanship that brings to mind Syndrome’s menacing villain statement in The Incredibles, “When everyone is super, no one will be.”

This isn’t to say that there aren’t true rock stars among us and this isn’t an essay against participation trophies. Rather, it is an observation of the dilution of exceptionalism or best practices in the professional sphere.
