Too Subtle?

When using humor, be careful as to not offend

Every Jan. 1, tons of people look forward to watching the Rose Parade in Pasadena, California. Parade broadcast coverage has not changed much over time, but, this year, Amazon decided to shake things up a bit, which got them into trouble with some viewers.

Amazon livestreamed a spoof of traditional Rose Parade coverage starring Will Ferrell and Molly Shannon as bumbling, oversharing television anchors. The footage was hilarious, but some viewers failed to receive the memo that it was supposed to be a joke, reports CinemaBlend. Amazon announced the special back in November.

The 2018 Rose Parade Hosted by Cord & Tish was hit with a flurry of one-star reviews from confused and uninformed viewers. “We haven’t been able to listen to a single marching band because Dumb and Dumber talk right through it,” complained one reviewer. “Then we had to listen to his tale of depression in 2007 while eating raw salmon, because they supposedly didn’t know their mikes were hot.”
