Five Things Working in the White House Taught Me About Office Politics

What sets apart the categories of office players

As far as presidential administrations go, the Obama White House was remarkably drama free.

Still, like any organization, the Obama White House was the kind of place where some people seemed to climb the ranks effortlessly, and others not so much. (For the record, I’d put myself in a middle category: I went from entry-level speechwriter to the outer rungs of the senior staff, but not before causing at least one international incident by mistake.)

After years in the White House, I came to the conclusion that what set the thrivers apart was rarely talent. In Obamaworld, talent came standard. Neither were they especially good at backstabbing, as you might expect from watching Scandal or VEEP.
