ASAE Sends DACA Letter to Congress

The organization argued DACA's value by pointing out that diversity is undeniably an issue that impacts associations

On Sept. 12, 2017, the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) sent a letter to Congressional leadership imploring them to take action to ensure that individuals eligible for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, known as DACA, are able to work and study and contribute to society without the threat of deportation.

ASAE is concerned ending the program would have serious repercussions for the economy. The letter states, “Diversity is undeniably an issue that impacts associations. Associations are designed to bring different people together for a common purpose. Our differences – not our sameness—ensure that we approach and address challenges from all vantage points.” ASAE’s letter can be found here.

Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle have expressed a strong interest in protecting DACA recipients, but there is not a clear path forward. In a surprise to many, President Donald Trump met with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on the evening of Sept. 13, 2017 to discuss a possible deal. Questions remain as to if a deal will be approved by Republican leadership and if funding for the border wall will be included.
