Congressional Funding Bill in Flux

To avoid a shutdown, GOP leaders are supporting a one-week funding extension

Unable to reach a deal on a broad funding bill, Republican lawmakers are supporting a one-week funding bill to keep the government open past Friday evening.

“This continuing resolution will continue to keep the government open and operating as normal for the next several days, in order to finalize legislation to fund the federal government for the rest of the fiscal year,” said House Appropriations Chairman Rodney Frelinghuysen (R-NJ) in a statement.

This morning, House Democrats announced they will oppose the short-term extension if the Republicans vote on their Obamacare repeal bill this week. The funding bill must pass by Friday night to avoid a government shutdown. House Republican leaders will likely need Democratic votes to pass the measure as some conservatives will oppose the funding bill.

The administration was unable to secure border wall funding in the Congressional funding bill. Earlier this week, President Donald Trump signaled he would be content to have the wall funded in the fall.
